Harry’s involvement with dogs spans 37 years, beginning in earnest when his father began managing a top Bouvier des Flandres kennel. Showing in conformation and obedience with the Bouv’s was interspersed with training to pull a cart as a fun diversion. A friendly greeting from a Borzoi at one of the many dog shows attended in his youth began Harry’s long admiration of that breed. When eventually able to have a Borzoi companion, one dog activity Harry investigated was that of lure coursing. Lure coursing is a wonderful activity for the 11 recognized Sighthound breeds eligible to enter sanctioned competition as well as other dogs that may try lure coursing for fun and exercise. The American Sighthound Field Association developed the sport of lure coursing as a safer and humane alternative to chasing live game. The ASFA has sanctioned lure coursing for over 25 years. The American Kennel Club began its lure coursing program in 1991. The pleasure of seeing excited and enthusiastic dogs chasing the lure has led to coursing becoming Harry’s primary canine activity. Currently he is an active member or officer in four coursing clubs, past Treasurer for the ASFA and a regular worker at Field Trials held by these and several other clubs. This fills most available weekends. Rounding out the Van Vliet household of Lure Coursers
is spouse, Cindy, who is an AKC Lure Coursing Judge, and daughter
Jillian. The critter population is ten dogs, Borzoi’s, Greyhound’s,
Whippets, Basenji’s and two cats. |
